You know how videogames were supposed to be what caused that kid to kill a lot of people at VA Tech? Well, the forensic report shows he didn’t own any videogames. If we are going to hold onto this theory, we’re going to have to declare that it was either Solitaire or Minesweeper that caused these shootings, as he had a computer, but had bought no games. Those games come with Windows by default. Wait…what if he was running Linux?
Also, Fox “News” is running a story suggesting, get this…that the kid was possessed by the Devil. That’s right. He was possessed. I guess we may as well go ahead and revive the Inquisition and declare the earth as flat again.
Why do I keep trying to have hope for humanity? They keep proving me wrong on a very consistent basis.
Whenever someone who is mentally unstable goes and does something messed up, we keep looking for some major outside influence to lay blame on. We can’t seem to wrap our heads around the fact that a lot of people are clinically fucked up. It’s not videogames, or rock music, or porn, or anything else. It’s that those who commit these crimes are fucked up. The majority of us who are not (severely) fucked up don’t go around shooting people, yet we play videogames, listen to rock music and watch porn. Why aren’t we just running around willy-nilly shooting everything in sight?
I think people just want something to blame so they can stop thinking about how deeply screwed up our society is, and how we all might have our own share in the blame of continuing it as it is. We don’t want to address the fact that we’re not all alright and that we have a lot of things we need to deal with in our society, but we’re too lazy and selfish to put forth the necessary effort and sacrifice to deal with them.
It’s so easy to lay the blame on something inanimate, like a videogame. But videogames didn’t drop out of the sky. We made them too, so even with that ridiculous theory, it still boils down to us.
