Test of the Poet

Although I dribble ink from my pen

to stain the paper with the words I can’t just say

and try to explain what cannot be said

I am realizing the test of the poet

is to express the feelings from the heart

without defiling them in the prison of words

To give full expression and form

to something more formless than vapor

I believe poets are those

who feel with such vividness

that we can not contain the experience

Our frustrating outlet, however grandiose

is just kindling to the fires in our hearts

We elaborate and paint

with a medium of sticks and loops

that clatter like thrown bones

in comparison to the symphonies we sing within

These words shackle my feet when I want to fly

We can paint our toothpick houses

with flowery syllables and curling tongues

yet they still shall burn away

as time erases our forgotten etchings

that could never really say

what we truly wanted to share
